For years, we have talked about pharmacists operating at the top of their license and being recognized as providers. A first step has been legislative recognition of the pharmacist as a provider, but even as that has happened, economic models and operational realities have been a barrier. While COVID has been an accelerant to broader recognition of the critical role of pharmacists and pharmacies, there are still many opportunities for pharmacists to be embedded into care teams and help close gaps-in-care. Payers need to think about how to do this. Will they share data at the POS? Will they reimburse pharmacists on a PMPM basis? Will they develop regional models? We will explore some of the emerging models and both technology and operational considerations for this to finally become more mainstream.
