Clinical and Real-World Study Challenges in the COVID-19 Era Part 2: Accelerating the Shift in the Research Paradigm from Traditional towards Digital/Virtual Solutions

Event Date: May 06, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has altered and restricted daily routine around the globe seemingly overnight. This environment demonstrates the need to think innovatively in the design and conduct of real-world studies. The need to ensure study subjects and site personnel safety is paramount. Additionally, study continuity and new study initiation in the face of competing priorities, healthcare systems which are stretched beyond their limits, and changes in how patient care is being delivered pose new challenges to scientific research. Virtual and technology driven solutions are available, but wide acceptability and adoption of virtual solutions have been slow. Several types of virtual and technology driven solutions can be implemented across a number of study designs as primary and/or risk mitigation study execution strategies. Accordingly, it is important to understand the spectrum of available virtual and digital solutions, and how they can be incorporated to positively facilitate research conduct.

Discussion Points

This webinar will discuss:

  • Needs that can be addressed by incorporating virtual elements into a study
  • Virtual and digital solution benefits that increase patient access and recruitment while reducing patient and site burden
  • Considerations for implementing virtual and technology driven solutions into your research studies
  • Application of virtual and technology driven studies, including examples of when and how virtual studies can be applied for short- and long-term follow-up studies (e.g., decentralized studies, technology driven EMR data collection, integrated delivery networks)

Key Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the different terminology used when referring to virtual and technology driven studies as well as options available for implementation
  • Understand the benefits and challenges associated with incorporating virtual or technology driven solutions into research studies
  • Recognize scenarios where virtual or digital elements could be efficiently implemented within a study
