NICE Talking to You: The Value of Early Scientific Advice

October 30, 2020

Starting in 2009, NICE became a pioneer among health technology assessment (HTA) agencies by offering the opportunity for early scientific advice, at fees ranging from £20,000 to £75,000 per project.

NICE’s scientific advice service includes two approaches: the standard (approximately 18 weeks; also the most in-depth) and express (approximately 12 weeks). The advice most commonly sought by companies tends to focus on:

  • Clinical trials, design and analysis
  • Trial populations
  • Outcomes
  • Comparators
  • Quality of life data
  • Economic analyses (modelling, extrapolation, resource use and costs)

“Getting advice with NICE as part of the dialogue with others has proven to be more popular than talking to the agency alone. It’s not clear how far advice from NICE alone is a substitute for getting advice as part of a bigger conversation,” said one beneficiary of the service. Read more here.
