Machine Learning to Predict Reentry Rates Using Hospital RWE

November 22, 2021

Machine learning, an advanced automated data analysis method, may predict 30-day hospital readmission rates, according to a report published in the journal Value in Health. This study by Li Q et al. used administrative data from over 1.6 million patient visits in Quebec from 1995-2012. By analyzing metrics like hospital visits and previous admissions, billed services, and physician compensation, researchers compared the ability of machine learning and traditional statistical methods to predict 30-day readmission.

The report states, “With further investigation, the findings and forecasts presented here show that machine learning could, in the future, be used to aid decision making by identifying the risk factors of readmissions putting the patient’s well-being front and center.”
