Young Adult Cancer Patients May Have Higher Survival Rates with Medicaid Expansion

December 22, 2022

A newly published study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that a Medicaid expansion could help improve survival rates for young adults living with cancer. The study examined data from 87,300 young adults in 2020 with new cancer diagnoses, demonstrating that a lack of health insurance is a substantial contributor to lower survival rates.

According to the ASCO Post, “As of November 2022, 11 states—including Georgia—have not adopted Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act, and South Dakota has adopted but not yet implemented the expansion. In the nationwide sample of 345,413 young adult patients newly diagnosed with cancer, researchers uncovered that Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act was associated with a significant increase in 2-year survival.”
