March 23, 2021

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has announced its intention to edit the accepted definition of French dressing and the ingredients required call it “French” following a discussion with the Association for Dressings & Sauces. This move would expand the condiment’s definition and allow for more dressings to be labelled as “French,” a term that does not indicate any relation to the country of France. Dr. Nestle remarks “They want to do it because they want less fat than what’s in the standard of identity, and they want to put more junk in it,” adding, “And their argument is everybody knows what these things are, and everybody knows what they’re buying.” She further notes, “This is how our government is spending its time? I think there are many things that are more important they could be doing.” Read more here.
