Value-based Models Achieve Better Patient Outcomes in Primary Care Practices

A new study from United Health Group shows that primary care physicians (PCPs) perform better on key quality metrics when reimbursed in a global capitation model in which they are paid a set amount per month. After analyzing data on more than 5 million UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage members, researchers found that 80% of patients treated in the value-based arrangements were screened for breast cancer or colon cancer, compared to 74% of those in fee-for-service.

“When we have the time and luxury to focus on outcomes, we do,” says Daniel Frank, M.D., chief medical officer at OptumCare.

Furthermore, the study found that blood sugar levels were much better controlled among members in global capitation arrangements. They were also more likely to receive eye exams, medication reviews, and functional status assessments. Read more here.
