Value-based Analysis of Telehealth in the US

Telehealth has rapidly expanded in recent years and is offered by up to 60% of care providers. This increase is due to the COVID-19 pandemic and increased accessibility of compatible devices. The adoption of telemedicine has reduced barriers to access and decreased readmission rates for some elderly patients. Importantly, it provides ample real-world evidence to drive value-based purchasing options and value-based agreements.

According to Qisu Zhang and Wayne Su, “the transition of reimbursement and payment in the healthcare system from volume to value requires better capability in collection and evaluation of patient outcomes. To this end, RPM and mHealth could be used to generate rich RWE by enabling the collection and transmission of patient-reported outcomes and vital signs, such as blood glucose level, blood pressure, blood oxygen level, and heart rate, through mobile applications and wearable sensors.”
