The End of the COVID-19 PHE Draws Near

The COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) is set to expire in the US next week, leaving much up in the air. The pandemic-era pause on Medicare redeterminations will hit patients soon, kicking millions off of healthcare coverage. In addition, vaccines and treatments for COVID will hit the private market, although uninsured Americans will still have access to the drugs free of charge.

According to Robert King and Ben Leonard, “But not everything will change. Congress has continued some eased rules for telehealth in Medicare and high-deductible health plans, as well as hospital at-home waivers, through the end of 2024. And the pandemic’s dramatic changes for some health sectors are sure to have new momentum well beyond the end of the emergency that first spurred them on”
