Telehealth Could Advance Value-based Care in the US

December 15, 2021

The rise of telehealth in the US may have the unintentional effect of advancing a value-based care (VBC) healthcare model in the country. Over 60% of healthcare institutions use telehealth, and it has had reduced hospital readmission and provided significant benefits for several subsets of patients. Telehealth also presents a promising opportunity to collect large amounts of RWD to speed the development and approval of medical devices and new drugs.

According to Qisu Zhang and Wayne Su of Xcenda, “RPM (remote patient monitoring) and mHealth (mobile health) could be used to generate rich RWE by enabling the collection and transmission of patient-reported outcomes and vital signs, such as blood glucose level, blood pressure, blood oxygen level, and heart rate, through mobile applications and wearable sensors. Although efforts are warranted to ensure user privacy and data security, with mHealth bridged into RPM, data analysis and patient engagement and education are available for better patient care and real-world research.”
