Study Finds Drug Launch Prices Grew 20% Annually Since 2008

June 14, 2022

A new study published in JAMA found that launch prices for new drugs have steadily climbed since 2008, with the average ballooning from $2,115 to over $180,000. The researchers examined the cost of 548 drugs using launch price data from the SSR Health drug price database. A representative from the industry group PhRMA panned the report citing the complexity of newer drugs.

According to Eric Sagonowski, “While they noted that biopharma companies are indeed launching more complex biologic and rare disease drugs these days, they argued that doesn’t fully account for the price growth. When factoring in drug rebates and accounting for new types of medicines hitting the market, prices still grew 11% annually, they wrote in an accompanying New York Times op-ed.”
