Stopping the Next Big Healthcare Crisis

Healthcare is facing an impending crisis due to healthcare inflation, nursing shortages, and widespread healthcare worker burnout. Solving this problem before the bottom falls out will require quick action. While systemic changes are needed, Robert Pearl, MD, offers 3 strategies that can be implemented now.

According to Pearl, investing in people is key, “The nurse transports the patient to the recovery area, then locates the instruments needed for the following case and, upon returning, often finds the housekeeper has just begun cleaning the operating room. A 45-minute delay between 45-minute cases is common. These delays frustrate the entire operative team and create surgical backlogs. Asked how to improve hospital operations, nurses in a recent survey called for (1) streamlined processes and (2) better communication and coordination. Doctors, meanwhile, cite “long hours” and “lack of control” as two of their biggest complaints.”
