Spike in Employer Insurance Costs in 2021 Raises Uncertainty Toward the Future

Results from a new Mercer survey show that the average insurance cost per employee jumped by 6.3% in 2021. This is nearly double the 3.4% increase in 2020. While this has caused some uneasiness among employers, many expected an increase due to long COVD claims and appointments that were originally delayed by covid. Although costs rose for employers, employees were fortunately not impacted as strongly.

According to Paige Minemyer, Senior Editor for Fierce Health Payer, “The survey also found that while healthcare costs sharply rose, employers largely did not turn to cost-shifting as a strategy to manage the increase. Among small employers, the median deductible in a PPO plan decreased from $1,000 to $900 in 2021, according to the survey.”
