Support is increasing for a system of health care built on patient-centered care, but the term “consumer” is being confused with term patient.
Purchasing health care is not the same as purchasing a car or a t-shirt. Patients, particularly if you are talking about purchasing healthcare for a serious illness, are vulnerable, frightened, and confused. The consequences of picking the wrong drug or oncologist, for example, are much greater than picking the wrong car.
