Roger Perlmutter Raises Over $500 Million for Protein Tracking Imaging Startup

January 7, 2022

Former Merck RD Chief Roger Perlmutter has raised over half a billion dollars for his new startup Eikon Therapeutics. The startup is poised to develop advanced protein tracking imaging systems for drug development based on super-resolution fluorescence microscopy. The technology could aid drug development by visualizing disease-associated proteins in real-time in living cells.

According to Nicole DeFeudis of Endpoints News, “Capturing protein functions and dynamics in cells has long been a challenge, and most scientists have resorted to observing them in fixed cells, a dead cell whose shape and internal components are nevertheless largely preserved. Other new players, like Relay Therapeutics, have attempted to track protein motion through experiments — an approach the biotech compares to visualizing proteins in HD movies, rather than black-and-white photos.”
