Reality Check for Real-World Evidence

How do real-world data such as those mined from EHRs match up to that of randomized clinical trials? Supporters of RWE say it yields targeted information that is more thorough than the evidence provided by clinical trials. However, doing high-quality RWE research is not necessarily easy— or inexpensive. And although EHRs and insurance claims may be rich sources of data, neither are designed for medical research. Dan Riskin, M.D., CEO of Verantos said, “If you look at the most recent data validity framework in RWE, it’s trying to get at what is believable. It’s a difficult task, one that requires rich data sources that include the narrative sections of doctor reports, representing 80% of the EHRs.” Read more here.
