Physicians Recognize Social Drivers of Health but Struggle to Address Them

According to a new survey, almost all physicians are well aware of the impact of social drivers of health (SDOH) on patient outcomes. The survey, which collected data from over 1,500 physicians, found that over 60% of those polled felt helpless to address SDOHs, which include financial instability, transportation problems, and more. Additionally, the survey shows that these barriers to healthcare equity also harm care providers.

According to Gary Price, MD, president of The Physicians Foundation, “Physician burnout is a complex challenge and according to physicians surveyed, multiple factors contribute to physician burnout rates—from administrative burdens to prior authorization requirements. However, eight in 10 physicians (83%) reported challenges in addressing patients’ SDOH contribute to physician burnout rates. Additionally, six in 10 physicians (68%) believe managing patients’ SDOH has a major impact on physician mental health and well-being.”
