PHAR President and Health Economics Director Discuss the Inherent Racism in Cost-Effectiveness Analyses

PHAR President and Founder Dr. Michael Broder and Director of Health Economics Jesse Ortendahl shared their thoughts on how cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs) perpetuate racism. Substantial evidence showing that Black Americans receive worse care and die younger than White Americans, yet CEAs continue in failing to consider how race impact outcomes.

The authors remark, “By failing to address or even acknowledge racially divergent outcomes, CEA serves to perpetuate racial inequities…Society leans too hard toward people who look like the authors already. Let’s try as health economists to make CEA lean toward justice instead.” Read more here.
