Patient-Centered Care: Which Patient is Centered?

A recent NHS report from the Race and Health Observatory highlighted the ethnic and racial disparities in healthcare access, experiences, and outcomes for UK patients. In a new PME article, author Mike Dixon discusses how this report highlights the need to consider patients as individuals with vastly disparate material conditions rather than a monolith.

According to Dixon, “We need to be considering every step of seeking and receiving healthcare and how that differs for individuals based on their specific circumstances. Then we need to provide not just information, but understanding, practical advice and, where possible, practical support from either the health system or industry/third-party partnerships.”
