Panelists during MM&M’s Hall of Femme in New York spotlighted ways women can empower themselves to make known their worth and advocate for pay equity in their careers.
“We should not focus on what someone else might be making, and instead make a commitment to understand what your worth is in the marketplace,” eHealthcare Solutions Executive Vice President of Sales Amy Turnquist said during the discussion.
Working to understand self-worth can facilitate salary negotiations. Turnquist said women can join professional organizations and research applicable state laws regarding pay discrimination.
Novo Nordisk’s Ericka Higgins-Tothe said empathy is also a vital component to develop connections and become stronger leaders.
“Empathy is relating to your audience and being authentic,” Higghins-Tothe, the company’s senior director of omni-channel marketing, said. “It helped me as a leader within my team to help make connections and deal with people on a one-on-one basis. It helped me driving connections across the company, putting yourself in their shoes and finding out what matters to them.”
