March 28, 2022

India’s National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has announced a price hike of 10.8%, the highest in the nation’s history. The agency, the country’s top regulatory body for drug pricing, increased prices based on Wholesale Price Index (WPI) data from 2020-2021. The price hike is specifically targeting scheduled drugs.

According to Ruchika of Medical Dialogues, “In case of non-scheduled medicines, a manufacturer is at liberty to fix the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) launched by it, but is not allowed to increase the MRP of such formulations by more than 10% annum.”
