Nonprofit Promises $1 a Day Insulin

Many Americans living with diabetes are forced to ration the insulin they need, potentially worsening their condition. Efforts to tackle the high price of insulin have met with limited success, but not all patients benefit from price caps. The nonprofit generic drugmaker Civica Rx has announced plans to produce and sell generic insulin for no more than $30 per month, a far cry from the $284 a month charged by some manufacturers, among the highest prices for the drug worldwide.

According to Jing Luo in a Marketwatch article,” One reason this has been the case has to do with the fact that insulin is a biologic drug, meaning that it’s produced using DNA technology by living organisms. Biologic drugs are harder to manufacture and are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration in a different manner than more conventional drugs.”
