New Study Finds Medicare Part D Prices Vary Widely by Location

October 10, 2022

A new study from Chapter has found that the prices Medicare Part D patients pay for prescription drugs varies wildly from place to place. These costs can add up, with some patients paying thousands of dollars more than others simply based on geography. The study was performed prior to the passage of US drug pricing reform in the Inflation Reduction Act

According to Katie Wedell, “Chapter used proprietary pricing data on all active Medicare plans in order to examine the difference in cost for insulin as an example of how big an impact geography can have on price. The analysis found one person receiving the same treatment may spend between $1,113 and $10,689 on insulin in a four-month period as a result of inconsistencies in geographic access and coverage.”
