New Report Examines Generic Drug Uptake Trends and Impact on Healthcare Costs

ISPOR’s Value in Health journal recently published an article examining generic drug uptake trends in the United States. Researchers assessed 227 prescription drugs with generics on the market, noting a decrease in generic uptake in the past few years. The study authors note that use of generics could substantially reduce drug prices and that legislation may need to shift to accommodate this strategy.

“Early generic uptake decreased over the past several years. This trend may adversely affect patients and increase prescription drug spending. Policies are needed to encourage generic competition, particularly among injected drugs administered in a hospital or clinic setting.” Read more here.
