ISPOR: Artificial Intelligence and Healthcare Decision Making

Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms have played a growing role in healthcare in recent years, spurred in part due to the rapidly expanding pool of data used to glean insights into patient outcomes, public health, and consumer purchasing preferences. There are many major benefits to AI-driven data analytics approaches, but there are important ethical and regulatory issues surrounding the use of the technology in human health. In a recent article in ISPOR’s Value in Health, authors Danielle Whicher, PhD, MHS, and Thomas Rapp, PhD, explore these challenges and more.

According to the authors, “As a growing number of AI devices are entering the healthcare market, health technology assessment (HTA) bodies are facing new challenges evaluating the efficiency of these devices. Indeed, a major concern raised in this themed section relates to the need to adapt current health economic evaluation models to determine the value of AI devices. The articles identify several methodological challenges.”
