Investigating Value from the Perspective of Providers

With the ever-growing nurse and physician shortage and record levels of provider burnout, understanding the motivations of health care workers is essential. John Watkins, PharmD, MPH, BCPS of Premara Blue Cross explores this topic in part 3 of ISPOR’s Value and Outcomes Spotlight series on the different meanings of value in the health care industry. Figuring out what makes providers tick is the first step to promoting workplace satisfaction and retention.

According to Watkins, “Providing value to each patient in daily practice is a strong motivator. Workdays for the physicians, nurses, and others that provide hands-on patient care are long, intense, and exhausting. Every patient visit is an opportunity to help, but also to harm if a mistake is made, an important clue overlooked, or a wrong conclusion drawn. At the end of each day, it is important to walk away thinking, “I made a difference in someone’s life today. I gave them something of value.”
