Insurance Design Harms Patient Health with Barriers to Access

November 23, 2021

Patient health is harmed by barriers to access caused by Insurance design, according to The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America’s (PhRMA) first Patient Experience Survey. Results indicate that 41% of all patients report at least one instance of non-adherence, which increases as financial impact builds. Non-adherence rates are highest in the patients who need healthcare the most, causing worse outcomes and higher costs to patients and providers.

Cynthia Hicks states that “Non-adherence to medicines and the negative health consequences is particularly troubling for vulnerable communities who already experience myriad barriers to health care access.”
