How Social Media Undermines Public Health

In a new Health Populi blog post, Jane Sarasohn-Kahn, MA, MHSA, explains the detrimental role of social media on public health, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week, an article in Beckers Health IT revealed that Google and Twitter blocked them from promoting their February 22 issue, which centers on racism and health because it was “too controversial”. However, they were far from the only platforms with such practices.

Jane writes, “Intimacy Justice which exposed Facebook’s Censorship of Ads for Women and People of Diverse Genders. While Facebook and Instagram (owned by Facebook) had accepted a variety of ads for men’s (sexual) health, dozens of ads promoting women’s health (often related to sexuality) had been rejected by the social media platforms.”
