Higher Risk of COVID-19 complications and Newborn Deaths for Unvaccinated Pregnant People

January 14, 2022

Nearly every pregnant person in critical care for COVID-19 was unvaccinated, according to a recently published population-level study from Scotland. The paper, published in Nature Medicine, looked at data from Scotland taken between December 2020 and October 2021 on all pregnant people in the nation. In addition, the study also found that all newborn and fetal deaths associated with COVID-19 were tied to the vaccination status of the parent.

According to Theresa Gaffney, “The extended perinatal mortality rate — which measures the rate of babies who died from around 28 weeks of pregnancy until about one month after birth — was just over 22 deaths per 1,000 births for pregnant people diagnosed with Covid-19 within a month of giving birth. That’s much higher than Scotland’s background perinatal mortality rate during the pandemic of more than 5 deaths per 1,000 births.”
