Health Affairs Editor: Institutions Must Use Power to Fight Racism

June 4, 2020

Health Affairs Editor Alan Weil in a recent blog post says health care institutions must “use their power to fight racism,” adding that it is insufficient to only stand against and protest it.

Weil’s blog post, titled “The Social Determinants of Death,” spotlights social determinants of health with the backdrop of nationwide protests against racial discrimination and police brutality.

“Will they cede wealth and power accumulated over decades to those who have been excluded?” Weil writes, referring to health care organizations. “Will they engage in meaningful dialogue designed to break down barriers to a well-functioning society—one in which people engage in authentic relationships and learn of their shared humanity? If no one else is leading that dialogue, will they initiate it and include others as equals?”
