Gamifying Healthcare to Promote Patient Engagement

Therapeutic compliance is key to patient outcomes, but engaging patients is challenging. By adding game components to digital therapeutics, developers can take advantage of the rewarding and attention-grabbing nature of gaming to get patients invested in their own care. A new PharmaPhorum article by Ben Hargreaves explores the potential of game-based therapeutics in improving patient outcomes. The first example of this class of therapeutics, approved in 2020, was EndeavorRX.

According to Hargreaves, “It is indicated to improve attention function as measured by computer-based testing in children aged 8 to 12 years old with primarily inattentive or combined-type ADHD who have demonstrated an attention issue. EndeavorRx presents sensory stimuli and simultaneous motor challenges, through the platform of a video game, to target neural systems in the brain related to the control of attention.”
