The latest issue of Managed Healthcare Executive spotlights how managed care pharmacy is changing, and what it can do to help trim rising health care costs.
Perry Cohen, editorial advisor and CEO of The Pharmacy Group, says in a column that in addition to pulling back administrative costs and boosting transparency, the roles of “the physician, pharmacist, and patient need to be redefined.”
” … The total cost of care must be evaluated to see what really adds value in medical care,” Cohen writes. “We need to develop new models of care to address the new world of healthcare.”
Cohen says the industry needs to “merge” data on pharmacy and medical claims, and patient-reported outcomes to effectively measure a drug’s performance.
“Managed care pharmacy needs to reinvent itself to make value-based contracting happen on the healthcare financing side,” he writes.
