FDA Vocalizes Support for Moderna and Pfizer Vaccines for Children Under 5 One Day Before Advisory Committee

June 13, 2022

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has signalled support for authorizing the Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines for children under the age of 5 just one day before the agency’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) is set to meet. The recommended authorization may not drive vaccination rates as much as hoped, as only 36% of children aged 5-11 have received both shots.

According to Zachary Brennan, “For Moderna’s two-shot series, FDA’s analysis confirmed what Moderna announced earlier, that efficacy was 36.8% (95% CI 12.5, 54.0) for the 2-5 age group, and 50.6%(95% CI 21.4, 68.6) for participants 6-23 months of age. But unlike other age groups, those responses occurred when Omicron was predominant.”
