FDA Commissioner Rob Califf Says Agency Will Advance New Evidence Generation System

July 13, 2022

During a Zoom event on Tuesday, June 12th, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Robert Califf told members of the Alliance for a Stronger FDA that the agency would promote the development of new evidence generation systems. Califf remarked that the US had fallen behind in evidence generation, despite having a robust data pool in electronic health records (EHR).

According to Zachary Brennan, “Which is sort of the timeframe I’m looking at, I want to turn over an FDA which is bolstered by much better evidence and with a winning strategy on how to counter misinformation, and how to bolster these areas where there hasn’t been a lot of attention. Everyone in the US has an electronic health record packed full of data that could be used to do studies very inexpensively, and this is especially important on the medical product side where more and more of the approvals are accelerated, which means by definition that it’s only reasonably likely that the benefits outweigh the risks.”
