FDA Approves Medtronic’s Automatic Insulin Pump

April 25, 2023

Meditronic has scored a win with the long-anticipated approval of its MiniMed 780G insulin pump by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The pump, which works in concert with the company’s Guardian 4 continuous glucose monitor to allow for automated insulin management, even bolus injections which weren’t automated by the previous version.

According to Andrea Park, “The new and improved SmartGuard system includes an algorithm that can automatically deliver correction bolus doses if a user’s blood sugar spikes above the preset range. People with insulin-dependent diabetes typically have to calculate bolus doses at mealtimes based on the number of carbs they’re about to consume, so the upgraded algorithm could help pick up the slack if they forget to take a dose before a meal or incorrectly calculate the carb count, according to Medtronic.”
