Experts say a faulty drug pricing system is leading patients to make higher-risk health care decisions, according to a Fierce Healthcare report.
Permanente Medical Group Associate Executive Director and internist Dr. Sameer Awsare told Fierce Healthcare he has a congestive heart failure patient whose poor care adherence put her in the emergency room.
“High drug prices are actually affecting the decisions my patients are making,” Awsare told Fierce Healthcare. “As a physician, this puts me in a tough position.”
Awsare said the patient’s risky choices due to the cost of her treatment not only take a toll on her overall health, but also lead to higher care costs.
“This is really affecting their lives,” he said.
