Expanding Telehealth to Farmers

Although the expansion of telehealth during the pandemic has broadened access for many communities, farmworkers in North Carolina and elsewhere have been left behind. Research shows that these farmworkers, 83% of whom are Latinx or Hispanic, face significant barriers to access to telehealth despite enthusiasm towards the technology. In addition to issues of discrimination, transient workers are deemed hard to reach.

According to Nadia Bey, “The health center leaves their contact information at work sites so workers can initiate contact with them rather than the other way around. Telehealth will not overcome all of these barriers to health service delivery, but it is an important option to explore for increasing access to care.”
