Evidence Generation for Patient-Centered Health Technology Assessment

Health technology assessments are increasingly shifting from payer-focused analyses towards a more patient-centered approach. However, understanding what value metrics patients care about has not been entirely resolved. This is one goal of the Patient-driven Values in Health care Evaluation (PAVE) Center at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. A new Health Affairs article explores PAVE’s efforts and provides two case studies as examples.

According to the article, ”The PAVE Center’s patient-informed value elements, which encompass attributes of treatment effects, access, cost, and life and social impacts, were conceptualized from the patient perspective with continuous engagement of patient stakeholders. The PAVE Center is building off these elements and integrating two key lines of research—stated preferences and economic evaluation—with the primary goal of testing novel methods to generate evidence of patient values in health care services.”
