Determining the Value of Continuous Glucose Monitoring

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) offers the potential for better diabetes management, but determining the value for patients, payers, and providers is complex. CGM devices, which measure blood glucose throughout the day, provide a wealth of data to guide treatment, but the upfront cost may blunt the relative value compared to standard fingerprick monitoring. However, some evidence supports the technology.

According to a Stat News article by Katie Palmer, “There is some research suggesting that continuous glucose monitoring can bolster an app-based approach to disease management. At the American Diabetes Association’s annual scientific session in 2021, Onduo published a study of almost 800 users in its digital diabetes program, both with and without intermittent CGM use. CGM users saw a bigger decrease in blood glucose over six months than non-CGM users. Among users with high A1Cs, a measure of long-term blood sugar control, the drop was 2.8%, compared to 1.8% among non-CGM users.)
