Centene Pays $28 Million After Fifth State Investigation

January 6, 2022

The health insurance company Centene agreed to pay the state of Kansas almost $28 million in a settlement after allegations they overcharged that state’s Medicaid program. This was the fifth deal the company had to make with a state company in 2021 alone. The company’s pharmacy benefits subsidiary is accused of misrepresenting pharmacy costs causing the company to put away $1.25 billion to pay for the cost of several state investigations.

According to Ed Silverman of Stat News, “In the latest settlement, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said an investigation found Centene failed to accurately report pharmacy expenditures to state regulators. An “opaque reporting system” made it difficult for the state to determine the nature and the extent to which certain pharmacy transactions were appropriate. The settlement covers January 2016 through Nov. 12, 2021.”
