Blog Post Explores Key Issues in De-Implementation

The last installment of a four-part blog series by AcademyHealth’s Research Community on Low-Value Care looks at some key hurdles health systems must tackle in the de-implementation process.

Scalability is one such challenge Moriah Ellen, Ben Gurion University, and Christian Helfrich, Seattle-Denver Center of Innovation for Veteran-Centered and Value-Driven Care, write.

“We have many promising strategies currently being tested in de-implementation, such as shared decision making, audit and feedback, and practice change management, which are promising approaches,” they write. “While the mechanisms of these strategies (awareness raising, knowledge transfer, motivation and/or prioritization) are at the provider level, when scaling up at a systems level they potentially introduce system-level unintended consequences.”
