Community health workers are a critical piece of healthcare system providing benefits to patients and the larger community. However, scaling up the current community health worker system towards universal healthcare (UHC) may be difficult. In a newly published paper in Global Health: Science and Practice, authors examine what happened when three healthcare sites shifted from treating individuals to considering entire households.

According to the authors, “Partners In Health (PIH), a nongovernmental organization with more than 30 years of experience working in over 10 countries, has responded to the UHC call by incorporating a CHW approach, called the “household model” (HHM), in 3 countries where larger health care system strengthening partnerships already exist.”
