AI-Driven Value-Based Care Must Contend with Bias

Many healthcare organizations are supporting their value-based care decision-making and research with data analytics powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). However, for these tools to help address issues of health equity, the bias in the datasets used by AI must be addressed.

According to Marzyeh Ghassemi of MIT, “In healthcare, we often use proxies for health that are not appropriate and can be problematic. When you use, for example, the level of patient visit, as a proxy for whether they may need a checkup in the next year, then you disadvantage minority patients who may have less access to care or are concerned about making a copay.”
