A Quarter of Medicare Recipients Experience Harm During Hospitalization

May 12, 2022

A newly released report from the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) finds that 25% of Medicare beneficiaries were harmed during hospitalization. The report is based on data covering 770 Medicare patients who were discharged from a hospital for acute care in October 2018. A new Becker’s Hospital Review outlines six key takeaways from the report.

According to Andrew Cass, “

  1. Twelve percent of patients experienced adverse effects that led to longer hospital stays, permanent harm, lifesaving intervention or death, according to the report.
  2. Thirteen percent of patients experienced temporary harm, which required intervention but did not cause lasting harm, prolong hospital stays, or require life-sustaining measures.”
