While health care spending accounts for roughly one-fifth of the U.S. economy, hospital care is by far the most expensive area, according to an Axios brief citing data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Hospital care on average costs individual Americans $3,357 per year, with professional services trailing behind at $2,733 per year.
According to the data, Americans spend on average about $1,019 for prescription drugs and $286 per year on home health care.
“And the cost isn’t going up because we’re using more health care, but because of the prices we pay for those services,” the Axios report states.
