Patrick Van der Valk
What is your HE-Artist talent or skill? Please describe.
I am a Beach Ultimate (Frisbee) lover and organizer. I run an international Federation that has been hosting world championships since 2004. Ultimate Frisbee is a team sport played by men and women on on sand or grass. Is a big part of my life, and my Wife also participates. We practice twice a week and travel to tournaments at least once a quarter. I’m currently involved in organizing the European championships that will take place in Spain in June.
Do you have a website where we can learn more?
How long have you been doing this?
I have been playing Beach Ultimate for more than 30 years.
Why did you start doing this?
I was attending an international summer camp, a Canadian and Swedish boy werer playing, and from the first time I saw the disc in the air I loved its flight path. The sport itself revolves around FairPlay, and is self-refereed even at world and continental championships. For example at this year’s European championships, countries such as Turkey and Norway compete but they still will make their own calls.
What makes you love doing this?
I love the smiles that I see when people play beach ultimate. It is a physically challenging sport but because of the spirit of the game, and the types of people it attracts, there is such a great balance between sport and fun. Players love it, and it shows.
What is your current job?
I am the director of marketing at Archimedes Inc.
How long have you been working in the field of health economics and outcomes research?
As long as I have been with Archimedes: six years. Before that I was involved in the chemical industry and technology.
And now, a few questions just for fun!
- What was your favorite food when you were a child?
My mom’s special meatballs. I adjusted the recipe and now my kids love daddy’s special meatballs.
- What’s the #1 most played song on your iPod or musical device?
I always use “shuffle mode” so no particular song sticks out.
- What sound do you love?
I like it loud!
- If you could throw any kind of party, what would it be like and what would it be for?
A beach party with street artists, freestyle Frisbee, music and dancing. How fun does that sound?
- If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?
Dr. David Eddy. I’ve had the pleasure working with David over the last six years and I have the utmost respect for him. He’s well spoken, can make complex things comprehendable, and fought for what he believed in: evidence-based medicine. Even though in the early years it was not well received and he had a lot of uphill battles, he succeeded in attaining his goal. I think David has a lot of great insights on how to move things forward in a positive direction while being surrounded by naysayers. I would love him to be my mentor.
- If you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be?
This question makes me feel like a kid in a candy store. Too many fun things to choose from. I don’t think I could make up my mind easily.
- If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet?
Barack Obama. I think he is an interesting, well-balanced person with a lot of insight and experience.
- What was the first thing you bought with your own money?
It immediately went into trips to play Ultimate Beach Frisbee!
