President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed into law two pieces of bipartisan legislation that outlaw pharmacy gag clauses, Fierce Healthcare reports.
The Patient Right to Know Act and Know the Lowest Price Act would open the door for pharmacists to offer cost-saving information to patients at the pharmacy counter, including whether they could save by paying cash instead of using their insurance.
“Our great citizens deserve to know the lowest price available at our pharmacies, and now that is what they’ll be getting,” Trump said.
ADVI Director Lindsay Bealor Greenleaf tells Fierce Healthcare that the impact would be significant despite limited data on the strategy.
“Prohibiting pharmacy gag clauses fits into a theme of taking a closer look at the role played by PBMs and the distortion caused by them in the supply chain,” Greenleaf said.
