A recent Health Affairs blog post outlines some of the key challenges and opportunities of value-based purchasing (VBP) initiatives state Medicaid systems are deploying in their drug purchasing protocol.
According to the post, there are several different value-based purchasing strategies, including results-based deals, adherence-based agreements, and a capped financial model.
“The trend toward using VBP in drug purchasing is likely to accelerate as states and the federal government look to control drug costs while maintaining beneficiary access to new and innovative therapies,” the post states. “Ultimately for VBP to take off with respect to drug purchasing, several legal and practical issues will need to be resolved.”
