While China’s health care system has seen major strides over the past 30 years, Chinese patients are still struggling to receive much-needed treatments.
According to a report from the Alliance to Protect Medical Innovation, some patients have resorted to smuggling, while others, such as Zhang Zhejun, have gone so far as to manufacture their own drugs.
Zhejun told The Times he concocted his own cancer drugs to treat his mother who was diagnosed with cancer. He said the ailing health care system either couldn’t, or wouldn’t, provide the necessary medication.
“I have this disease, and if they want to convict me, there’s nothing I can do,” Hong Ruping, who manufacturers his own treatment, told The Times. “What is the difference between going to jail and being sick? There is no freedom.”
