A bipartisan group of former Food and Drug Administration commissioners say the federal agency should split from the Department of Health and Human Services, FierceHealthcare reports.
The former commissioners say a departure from HHS would enable the FDA to streamline operations using cutting-edge science and the latest evidence.
“FDA policies and actions are not driven by partisan politics: The scientific foundation for its decision making is guided by legislation that almost invariable has bipartisan support,” the group wrote in a recent article published in Health Affairs. “We believe that our recommendations fit squarely within that bipartisan tradition of keeping the agency as up-to-date and effective as possible.”
